N-Acetylcisteine (NAC) is an antioxidant medication used in treating Tylenol (Acetaminophen) poisoning. . NAC is formed from the amino acid L-cysteine and it works by binding the poisonous forms of Acetaminophen that may form in the liver. NAC as an antioxidant may play a role in preventing certain types of cancers   What is N-Acetylcisteine used for? N-Acetylcisteine is used for any of the following illnesses or conditions: • Partial or complete lung collapse • Lung tests • Care of people with tubes placed in their windpipe • Acetaminophen poisoning  In any of these cases, NAC may be administered by inhaling the medication or by injection. NAC should only be administered by a healthcare professional.  N-Acetylcisteine has been shown to be possibly effective in treating or managing: • chest pain (angina) • swelling or inflammations • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease • Ifasfamide toxicity (Ifex)  • High blood homocysteine • Kidney failure • Heart attacks  • Other conditions not listed   What are the Side effects of N-Acetylcisteine? N-Acetylcisteine is generally regarded as safe to use, however, when taken by mouth, users may experience nausea, dry mouth, vomiting, unpleasant odor, and diarrhea.  When inhaled, N-Acetylcisteine users may experience swelling in the mouth, runny nose, drowsiness, clamminess, or chest tightness.    Can N-Acetylcisteine be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding?    N-Acetylcisteine is generally safe to use during pregnancy as there is no evidence that it may cause harm to an unborn child, however, there is not enough reliable information to determine its safety during breastfeeding. To be on the safe side, consult your doctor or pharmacist before using this medication.    What is the dosage of N-Acetylcisteine? N-Acetylcisteine is usually given by mouth at a daily dosage of 600 to 1200mg per day, however, it may also be inhaled or injected. The dosage and best form of use will be determined by your doctor.  N-Acetylcisteine can be found in some dietary supplements, however, supplements should not be used as a replacement to specialized prescription products.
